Even after several years of being together, Hollywood's power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seem to be as in love as they were when they first filmed "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" in 2005.
They haven't been on a movie together again after that, although their relationship blossomed off the screen. Now, the couple is starring alongside one another in the period drama called "By the Sea," and Jolie Pitt is even directing it.
During an interview with V Magazine's winter issue, Pitt raved about his wife's performance as the director, saying that she is very "decisive, incredibly intuitive, knife-sharp," not to mention "sexy."
The story, which is also written by Jolie Pitt is about a struggling and dysfunctional married couple in the 1970s, according to Entertainment Weekly. It is shot on location in Malta.
Interestingly, Brad and Angelina began production for the film right after their intimate wedding in France. Looking back, Pitt said that going straight to production is not the best idea they had to spend their honeymoon.
"It was probably not the wisest way to spend a honeymoon. But then again, fighting to make something together," he said. "What better metaphor for marriage? It's not a film that responds to the current zeitgeist or storytelling - rather, a quiet, mature look at the challenges of love and adult loss."
Pitt also said that they preferred to keep "By the Sea" as a "family affair," just like Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes did.
"We, by our own admission, were overdue. If I'm going to work, I want to work with my wife," he said.
Jolie Pitt added: "We watch this couple go off the track and we wait to see if it gets more unhealthy, or if they will recover. I think too often people go through very painful transformative experiences and they don't stay together. They abandon each other."
Despite the fictional couple's unhappy relationship, audiences cannot deny the beauty of the film. One of the things people loved about "By the Sea" is its setting. The bar and hotel which the couple goes to has garnered a lot of interest, but Jolie Pitt sadly confirmed that it does not exist.
"It's this lovely and quiet island and we built the hotel and bar. Everyone who has seen the movie wants to go to that exact place - but it's just the magic of film," she explained.
