Major game publisher Activision confirmed that a new installment of the "Call of Duty" franchise will be released sometime this year, Polygon reported. Reports about the new game were confirmed by Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, during the company's fourth quarter financial briefing held on Thursday.
According to Hirshberg, development of the new "Call of Duty" game will be handled by Treyarch. This studio, a subsidiary of Activision, has been developing "Call of Duty" games for the company since 2005. Treyarch's contributions to the franchise include "Call of Duty: World at War," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and "Call of Duty: Black Ops II."
The CEO noted that turning over the project to Treyarch is part of Activision's three-year plan for the popular game franchise.
"This fall's game will be Treyarch's first on the three-year development cycle," Hirshberg said during the briefing. "It will be loaded with innovation, and we're excited to share more details with our community soon."
Treyarch is joined by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games in Activision's three-year cycle. It began with Infinity Ward's "Call of Duty: Ghosts" in 2013 followed by Sledgehammer Games' "Advanced Warfare" last year.
As to what the new "Call of Duty" game will be about, Hirshberg remained tight-lipped regarding its details during the briefing.
However, it has been rumored that Treyarch is looking to bring back the game series to World War II with the release of "Call of Duty: World at War II." The game will serve as a sequel to the studio's 2008 game "Call of Duty: World at War."
In January of this year, a Twitter user posted a leaked poster for Treyarch's upcoming game, according to Gamepur. Based on details on the poster, the studio will unveil "World at War II" on May 4, 2015. The event will be presented by Microsoft's Xbox department.
However, neither Treyarch nor Activision has commented on the leaked poster or details about the new game.
