Season after season, the brains behind "Castle" have come up with ways to shake up the show. Previously, they did it by abducting Rick Castle on the day of his wedding and making him disappear for a month.
For season 8, co-showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter decided that promoting Kate Beckett to captain of the 12th precinct and splitting up the show's power couple is the best way to go, much to the chagrin of fans, who have enjoyed seeing Castle and Beckett happily married.
This is why during his interview with TV Line, Nathan Fillion, the actor who portrays Castle defended the decision of co-showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley to split up Castle and Beckett for the meantime.
According to him, Winter and Hawley wanted to split CasKett up only to bring them closer together in the end, since they will be rekindling their brewing romance from a few seasons back.
"People had a desire, a wont, for them to fight for something. I think the showrunners did a really good job," he said.
This is why "Castle" season 9 would be very similar to the first few seasons of the show, with Castle stirring up trouble just to get Beckett's attention, and Beckett trying to mask her fondness for Castle.
And because "Castle" isn't really a drama series, both Winter and Hawley will try to inject as much humor as they can into the storyline.
"It's never been much of a drama; it's far more a comedy with dramatic and heartfelt moments. And they wanted to bring it back to a time when it was funny, when it was great, when it was the light-hearted show that everybody fell in love with," Fillion explained.
For the next episode of "Castle," the bestselling novelist slash private investigator will be dealing with the death of his favorite author, and with the help of his daughter slash assistant Alexis, they will find out who is really behind the murder.
At the same time, Castle will bend over backwards just to win back his wife, but Beckett will resist in pursuit of justice and resolution for her fellow cops' murders.
Plus, more challenges are up ahead for the couple. The trailer teased that there are many secrets that will trouble the once happy union of Castle and Beckett. Castle even said, "There's no greater betrayal than a lie in a marriage."
