Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler admitted that he needs to improve in their remaining games in order to help his team bounce back from their disastrous start this season.
The Bears are currently in last place in National Football Conference North standings with their 3-6 record. Cutler said that the team as a whole should improve, but he conceded that he should perform his job better to jump start their improvement.
"We have to get better, I have to get better," Cutler told ESPN. "That's just kind of the focus right now, finding every little thing I can get better at to try to win a ballgame."
Cutler has been struggling this season, which is the main reason why the Bears have yet to reach expectation this year. The 31-year-old quarterback has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 2,365 yards, but has already committed 15 turnovers - 10 interceptions and five fumbles - this season.
"Whenever you're losing, your confidence is going to be a little bit lower," Cutler said of his poor performance this season. "I think earlier in the week and throughout the week, you've got to gain confidence for the game. If you go into the game with low confidence, you don't have a chance in this league."
In their 55-14 loss to Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Cutler tallied the worst passing rating of the year - 68.8 - after completing just 22-of-37 passes with two interceptions.
Following their lopsided loss to the Packers, Bears coach Marc Trestman called for improvements on Monday, saying that changes should start with Cutler.
When asked about the possibility of benching Cutler in the hope of turning their fortunes around, Trestman said that they should consider several factors before making such move, which means that the 31-year-old will start for the Bears again on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
"I think that we all have to do better. And I say that -- I know it starts with the quarterback. It always does. But there are a lot of things that have to get done before something like that would be a consideration." Trestman told Chicago Tribune when asked about benching Cutler.
