'Doctor Strange' Movie: Rachel McAdams' Mysterious Role Comes As a Surprise, Might Not Be Playing Female Lead After All

True Detective' Season 2 Cast Rachel McAdams

Things are starting to fall into place as far as the characters in Marvel's "Doctor Strange" film is concerned.

"Sinister" director Scott Derrickson is all geared up to helm the film with a screenplay by Jon Spaiths, and they are going start filming in London pretty soon.

Marvel initially wanted to get Joaquin Phoenix to play the lead role, but when negotiations panned out, they got "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch instead.

Cumberbatch will portray Dr. Stephen Strange, a cocky neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands because of an accident, but while he searches for a cure, he manages to obtain magical powers.

His co-stars will be "The Chronicles of Narnia" star Tilda Swinton as his mentor named The Ancient One, while "12 Years a Slave" star Chiwetel Ejiofor will portray the villainous Baron Mordo.

"Hannibal" star Mads Mikkelsen was reportedly offered a role as another villain, while "The Notebook" star Rachel McAdams has agreed to sign on to join the film. However, her role remains cloaked in mystery.

For the longest time, people have assumed that McAdams will play Strange's female lead, possibly Clea. But according to the Latino Review, McAdams wasn't cast as Strange's love interest since she might be playing Christine Palmer, who appeared in Marvel's "Night Nurse" comics and worked as a surgical nurse.

Some people actually thought that Rosario Dawson in Marvel's "Daredevil" series will be the Night Nurse, according to show runner Steven S. DeKnight. He said that she was "going to be the actual Night Nurse from the comics... we had her name in a script and it came back that it was possible (the Marvel Cinematic Universe films) were going to use her," so instead they used a different comic book character for her - Claire Temple.

Marvel execs explained that Dawson cannot be the Night Nurse because "the feature side had plans for her down the road," and this is where McAdams comes in.

When sought for a comment about McAdam's role in "Doctor Strange," Marvel simply said "no comment," so fans will have to wait a little bit longer before confirming or dismissing the news.

Linda Carter is actually the more prominent Night Nurse character, but people are guessing that they chose Palmer instead because of her being a surgical assistant, which would significantly help Strange as a surgeon.

"Doctor Strange" will open in cinemas on November 4, 2016.
