Floyd Mayweather has earned millions of money from pay-per-view fights for his entire career, but his upcoming bout might air for free, CBS Sports reported.
Mayweather, who recently broke pay-per-view records again during his showdown with Manny Pacquiao in May, could make his farewell fight on September 12 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
According to CBS Sports, sources close to the situation revealed that the farewell fight could be broadcast on CBS for free. The report also added that an announcement could be made next week.
While the date and venue of Mayweather's next fight are set in stone, his camp has yet to reveal names of possible opponents, but several fighters are reportedly in the mix.
Keith Thurman, who is the reigning World Boxing Association welterweight champion, is being mentioned as one of the possible opponents of Mayweather, but most fans and analyst are convinced the 26-year-old will not get the chance.
Thurman, who holds an impressive 25-0 record with 21 of his victories coming by knockout, will defend his title against Luis Collazo on Saturday in Tampa. Even if he wins, his upcoming fight will be too close to Mayweather's proposed fight date.
But when asked about the possibility of facing Mayweather just two months after his bout against Collazo, Thurman insisted that he is willing to face the reigning pound-for-pound king if he wins on Saturday.
"Considering my heart and my desire to fight Floyd Mayweather, to me it is possible," Thurman told ESPN. "I do have this fight, and anything can happen in this fight. Hopefully everything goes well. We have a terrific knockout performance like we want to have; and we walk out with no injuries."
But unlike other fighters who are aching for a shot against Mayweather, he will not desperately lobby for a bout against the undefeated world champion because he thinks he can make a name for himself even without facing the Grand Rapids native, who is considered as the best fighter of this generation.
"A lot of people say I'm never going to fight Floyd Mayweather and he'll never give me a shot," Thurman said. "But I say that Keith 'One Time' Thurman will have a career with or without Mayweather because I'm going to be here at the top of the welterweight division for many years to come."
