Gennady Golovkin is being linked to a showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr. And if the fight eventually happens, Golovkin is quite sure he will hand Mayweather the first defeat of his boxing career.
Golovkin, who holds an impressive 33-0 record with 30 victories by knockout, said in an interview with TMZ Sports that a showdown with Mayweather is his dream bout.
When asked to give his thoughts on the possible outcome of the fight if ever they will collide inside the ring, the 33-year-old International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight world champion said he is 100 percent sure he will beat Mayweather.
Upon hearing about Golovkin's remarks, an unidentified person from Mayweather's camp fired back at Golovkin. The Kazakh champion has knocked his last 20 opponents, but Mayweather's camp is not impressed, saying that Golovkin is a nobody because he has not face a big-name fighter before.
"Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd," a person from Mayweather's camp told TMZ. "It's the biggest payday they could possibly have. Golovkin has never fought a top opponent in his whole career. We're surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest."
Aside from Mayweather, Golovkin is also being linked to a showdown against either reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Cotto and Alvarez will reportedly collide in September or October, where the winner will have to defend the title against Golovkin.
As for Mayweather, the 38-year-old has yet to give a hint on who he is planning to face in his next fight in September, which could be his farewell fight.
Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that the reigning pound-for-pound has yet to talk to him about a possible foe, but they are set to arrange a fight in September. Ellerbe said that all talks about Mayweather's next opponent are all speculations because only the Grand Rapids native knows what he wants to do.
"Floyd will determine who he fights and when he fights and no one will rush his decision," Ellerbe told MLive. "He'll make up his mind who he's fighting, if he's fighting, and we'll go from there. And that decision will be made not one day before he's ready to make it."
Mayweather improved his record to 48-0 with 26 knockout victories after scoring a unanimous decision win against Filipino nemesis Manny Pacquiao in their record-setting fight last month in Las Vegas, Nevada.
