Five years in the making and still, the boxing world may never see the megafight between this generation's best boxers.
Boxing fans from all over the world were reeling with excitement after news broke out that both fighters have finally met - in a Bucks-Heat game last week.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. reportedly approached Manny Pacquiao during the game and exchanged phone numbers. A report from CBC then mentioned that Mayweather went to Pacman's hotel suite to negotiate about the fight.
Unfortunately, several days after the exciting meetup, no fight has been decided or finalized just yet.
According to a report by Daily Mail, former light welterweight world champion Amir Khan thinks the fight will never happen.
During an interview with Boxing Tonight, Khan weighed in on the possibility of the dream match between two of the best boxers of all time.
'Honestly that fight will never happen, in my opinion", Khan stated.
'I can't really see that fight from happening, there is too much politics with that fight. There's different promotions teams and different management teams - I don't think they will let that fight happen."
In another report by Newsday, HBO president Ken Hershman said on Wednesday that they have done everything to get the fight done.
"Our position has been consistent throughout this whole process", said Hershman during the press conference of a fight between heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko's against Bryant Jennings on April 25.
"We're here to stand by and help wherever we can to make this fight happen. We're not an impediment to that happening, and we'll do what's necessary from our end. Then, it's up to the principals."
However, in spite all the negativity concerning the fight, boxing fans are still hopeful that the fight can still happen, although both fighters would already be very vulnerable at this points in their respective careers.
In the report by ESPN, both fighters are approaching the twilight of their careers. Pacquiao's stunning 2012 KO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez was clearly an indication of his decline from his prime.
On the other hand, Money Floyd's recent fights against Marcos Maidana showed his vulnerability against an aggressive fighter. While the unbeaten Mayweather still emerged victorous on those two fights, it showed that his counter-punching style has its limitations when facing an aggressor.
In case the fight does happen, the Daily Mail report said Khan would be eager to watch as a boxing fan.
'If it does happen, I'm a big boxing fan and I would love to see it."
