Floyd Mayweather announced his retirement after winning against Andre Berto on Saturday night, but British boxer Amir Khan thinks the reigning pound-for-pound king will fight again.
Khan, who has been lobbying for a showdown against the unbeaten champion, said in an interview with Sky Sports that he knows Mayweather fight for the 50th time and the Bolton, England native thinks that it will be against him.
"I can't see him retiring," Khan said. "I know what Floyd Mayweather is like; I've spent time with him, I've been in the gym with him, he's a guy who can't stay in one place. So I really believe he will come back for that 50th fight and I really think he will go for that Amir Khan versus Floyd Mayweather fight."
Khan, who has a 31-3 record with 19 knockout victories, has made it no secret that he wants a shot against Mayweather. He almost got his dream bout last year when he was considered frontrunner in the race to face the Grand Rapids native.
However, Mayweather eventually decided to face Marcos Maidana in May last year and in a rematch in September. He was also considered before the 38-year-old opted to face Manny Pacquiao in their record-setting showdown.
"I'm obviously very upset I didn't get the fight," Khan said. "We have to remember him as a great fighter. He was a very good fighter, what he did in boxing, all the entertainment, the showbiz and everything."
But while waiting for Mayweather, Khan revealed that he is focused on negotiating for his next fight against another boxing superstar -- former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Khan, who is coming off a unanimous decision win against Chris Algieri in May, revealed that he is negotiating with Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum about a potential showdown early next year.
Pacquiao is not ready to fight again this year after sustaining a shoulder injury while training for the fight against Mayweather, but previous reports indicated that he will make his return in early 2016.
"The Manny Pacquiao fight seems more likely to happen," Khan said. "We are working on that fight, we are speaking to Bob Arum and his team and I think if that is going to happen, it will happen early next year. It's a good fight for me. We know each other quite well."
Khan, a former super lightweight world champion, is familiar with Pacquiao because they sparred before when he was still under the watch of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach.
