It has been two years already since the last G.I. Joe film Retaliation, but now more news have been surfacing about the third installment of the successful franchise.
Screen Rant reports that G.I. Joe 3 will not carry over any writing or directing talents from the two previous movies. Jon M. Chu, who directed the second movie was originally recruited for the third installment, but the director has decided to work on other projects such as the live-action Jem and the Holograms (2015) and Now You See Me: The Second Act (2016).
For a while, it seemed like director Martin Campbell of Casino Royale and Green Lantern fame will be the one to replace him, but now, it appears as if D.J. Caruso will be the directing the third installment while screenwriter Aaron Berg develops the script.
Caruso's directorial works are very diverse, with him working on Disturbia, Eagle Eye, and I Am Number Four. Meanwhile, Berg is somewhat of a newbie in Hollywood, but he did write the script for Section 6, which is laden with military operations and espionage, so his work on the third G.I. Joe film might just "revamp the action franchise," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Certain characters will be retained in the third movie, although it is eager to introduce new ones as well. New characters might be the villainous twins Tomas and Xamot, and it is also quite possible that Channing Tatum's Duke, who died in a surprising twist in the second movie, might be coming back for the third film. However, the resurrection of Duke is seeming less and less plausible now because of Tatum's other movie commitments.
Even after starring in the flop Jupiter Ascending with new mother Mila Kunis, Tatum will be starring in different new films such as Magic Mike XXL (2015) and X-Men Apocalypse (2016). He will be playing the mutant Gambit in the upcoming X-Men film, and will even star in his own solo movie in 2016.
The news has been confirmed by Fox, who also announced that they will release another solo Wolverine film in the future. Despite being a thief, Tatum has nothing but respect for his mutant character.
"He was the punk rock of all the superheroes," the actor told Empire Online. "Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy."
Gambit's real name is Remy LaBeau, and he made his first appearance in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 back in 1990. Some of his powers include the ability to manipulate kinetic energy and transferring it to other objects.
