To pay tribute to Leonard Nimoy, the developers of the "Star Trek Online" announced that they will create an in-game memorial for the actor, Polygon has learned.
Nimoy, who is best known for playing Spock in the "Star Trek" televisions and film series, passed away on Feb. 27.
Cryptic Studios, the developer of the massively online multiplayer "Star Trek" game, made the announcement through the game's forum. Executive producer Stephen Ricossa stated that the in-game memorial for Nimoy and his character Spock will be set-up on March 5.
"Everyone at Cryptic Studios was saddened to hear of his passing and we want to make sure we never forget the cultural impact of the man or the character he played," Ricossa wrote in the online forum. "To that end, the 'Star Trek Online' team will implement a standing in-game memorial to Spock and Leonard Nimoy this Thursday March 5th with our regular weekly maintenance."
"In this way, we hope to keep his memory as alive on our game as he is in all of our hearts," the executive producer added.
Nimoy died at the age of 83 on Friday due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He passed away a year after announcing he had COPD, a disease related to cigarette smoking, according to the New York Times.
He played Spock in the original "Star Trek" television series which ran from 1966 to 1969. He later on worked on various succeeding "Star Trek" films. His recent appearance in the franchise was in 2013's "Star Trek: Into Darkness." Nimoy also did the voiceover work for Spock on "Star Trek Online," which was first launched in 2010.
Following his death, "Star Trek Online" players travelled to the game's Vulcan planet to pay their respects to the deceased actor. According to Reddit user arnacle999, around 1,000 players gathered in Spock's home planet, Eurogamer reported.
