Gotham will be losing one of its main characters as Jada Pinkett Smith recently confirmed her departure from the hit television show following the conclusion of her one-year contract, according to Games Radar.
Smith, who plays the formidable and voluptuous mobster named Fish Mooney, directly responded to the queries regarding her appearance in the next season of the said franchise. When asked whether she will be reprising her role in Gotham's Season 2, the actress took on a straightforward answer.
"I don't think so, no," Smith confirmed regarding her return for the next season. "I signed for a year, and the year is up," the Gotham main actress explained. "But, there are some great things coming ahead on Gotham - believe me, there's a lot of good stuff coming," she added, urging the fans to constantly support and follow the thrilling series.
With regards to her latest act of removing one of her own eyes, Smith admitted that she herself did not expect such thing to happen. However, she shared that deeper introspection on the character she played eventually made her realize that the deed truly appealed to the person of Mooney. "When I first read the script, I was like oh, wow, this is extreme. And then as I thought about Fish, I said she definitely would get down like this," she shared in an interview with Live With Kelly and Michael.
She also discussed that her character as a villain gave her an avenue to explore a completely different persona compared with the usual roles she played in the past. "I get to do extreme things. She's evil and that's always so much fun," Smith admitted during the conversation with the hosts.
Her announcement to leave the show was immediately followed by speculations among fans and followers. The most predominant rumor linked to her absence next season is the possibility that her character will be killed off at the end of the first season. Although this may seem as the most viable plot, the show's producers appear to be thinking of other ways to deal with the loss. "Fish Mooney's storyline takes a lot of interesting twists and turns into the finale of season one of Gotham," the series' executives shared in the report.
Gotham is set to return with four more episodes to conclude its first season on April 13, 2015.
