All three victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. The police officer was in stable condition when he was airlifted by a helicopter. The officer was shot after responding to a dispatch call's report of two stabbings in the area.
The male suspect rammed his vehicle through the store; breaking the entire entrance. His license plate number is YZZ871. He barricaded himself inside the gas station convenience store to evade law enforcement. The owner of the store, a cook, and a customer managed to escape.
Louisiana State Troopers called the suspect's brother to the location on Martin Luther King Drive in order to negotiate with the gunman. After releasing tear gas into the mart, a SWAT team entered the premises and carried the suspect out alive at approximately 6 p.m.
The Advocate reported that the male suspect was taken to a Lafayette hospital to be treated for potential tear gas burns. The police will take the gunman to St. Landry Parish Jail in Opelousas, LA following treatment.
