'Homeland' Season 5 Plot & Spoilers: Fifth Season Set 2.5 Years Later in Europe?

Exciting things are ahead for Homeland season five, which will see the show in Europe 2.5 years after season four left off.

So what is Carrie Matthison, Saul, and the rest of CIA team doing in Europe?

In an interview with Variety, show runner Alex Gansa and Claire Danes revealed several major details and plot changes of the upcoming season.

The biggest reveal they made was that Danes' character Carrie "will no longer be an intelligence officer" and the setting will be in "probably Germany."

As to why, Gansa did not go into detail. However, he did hint that they will be in Europe "in relation to concerns about terrorism and Western security issues."

Danes was asked the same question but she jokingly replied what Carrie is doing there: "She's making beer."

The next season will also explore the relationship between Carrie and fellow CIA agent and assassin Quinn, played by Rupert Friend.

The male writers of the show were all against the idea of Carrie having a relationship with Quinn, but Meredith Stiehm was all for it.

"I was a fierce advocate for it," Stiehm said. "I felt there was something in the air (between the two) from day one."

Another thing the show will tackle is a shocking scene from season four, where Carrie nearly drowned her baby girl. Danes knew that her character would receive a lot of flak for that infamous scene.

"That seemed like a pretty real challenge to an audience. I don't know if there is a greater taboo than an unloving mother."

Gansa added that it was difficult shooting that particular scene, not just because of the emotional turmoil of the character, but because they had to do an underwater shoot to film the baby's perspective.

But Danes quickly added that they didn't make any baby suffer while shooting the scene. "It was not a real baby - I just want to clarify," she said.

Danes even had a light moment with her fans when she was asked about her "cry face," where her eyes would bulge and her jaw would quiver.

"I swear to god it's just what my face does," Danes laughingly said. "It's just how I cry."

Gansa was thoughtful when asked about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and whether or not the show would consider incorporating them into the show's storyline in the future.

"Do we give them a platform? I don't know. It's an interesting question...We're one of the few shows that gets to really comment on current events. We take that responsibility very seriously," he said.

Homeland season five will premiere on Showtime in September 2015.
