Currently being recognized as the third highest grossing movie of all time, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have released an official announcement about the upcoming sequel to "Jurassic World.'
The follow-up film has been set for a release on June 22, 2018 and will see the return of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who will reprise their roles as Owen and Claire.
Producer Frank Marshall will once again team up with Steven Spielberg in leading their group of filmmakers for the franchise's second chapter.
"Jurassic World 2' will be penned by Colin Trevorrow, who directed the first movie, alongside Derek Connolly. Spielberg will also be joined by Trevorrow as executive producer for the film.
Announcement for the film's official title along with its director and other casting details are yet to be made.
When the cast and crew of "Jurassic World' began their global press tour before the release of the film, BadTaste.it caught up with Trevorrow and asked the director whether he was still up for helming a new installment for the sci-fi film franchise.
"Jurassic Park is like Star Wars. Different directors can give a different taste to each movie," Trevorrow told the site. "I would be involved in some way, but not as director."
Last year, Trevorrow also teased about possible "Jurassic World' sequels, saying: "We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Jurassic World' went over the $1.522 billion global box office mark, triumphing over "The Avengers' to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time, behind "Avatar' ($2.788 billion) and "Titanic' ($2.186 billion).
Playing now in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters, the sci-fi adventure movie follows a story set 22 years after the events of Steven Spielberg's original Michael Crichton adaptation, "Jurassic Park,' in 1993.
Aside from Pratt and Howard, this year's "Jurassic World' also starred Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley.
"Jurassic World' significantly contributed to an already impressive year for Universal Pictures as it became the fastest studio to reach $2 billion at the box office last month, which was also brought on by the commercial success of "Fifty Shades of Grey' (February), Furious 7 (April) and Pitch Perfect 2 (May).
