The age of flip phones is not yet over as Korean manufacturer LG Electronics recently unveiled one in its home market.
Dubbed deliciously as the LG Ice Cream Smart, the flip phone is an Android midranger that aims to cater to flip phone fans in Korea.
According to the report by GSM Arena, the device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset and quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, both staples in midrange devices in the market today. The flip phone also packs a 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480 pixels, 1GB of RAM and an 8GB built-in memory which can be expanded via the microSD card slot.
Other specs include an 8MP primary camera at the back (the lid part) of the flip smartphone, while there is a VGA snapper in front. Completing the specs sheet is a 1,700mAh battery, support for LTE connectivity, DMB-TV and Android 4.4 Kit Kat.
Unfortunately, it looks like the LG Ice Cream Smart flip phone will not be available outside of Korea. Additional details about pricing and the actual release are not yet revealed.
This is not the first time LG will be launching a flip phone that runs on Android. In September last year, the Korean brand also unveiled a flip phone dubbed LG Wine Smart.
The market for flip phones have not died in spite of the lesser demand for the device. Unlike today's bar smartphones, flip phones usually come thicker due to the portions for the screen and the keypad.
Still, their appeal has not waned, particularly in Korea where even Samsung announced a flip phone last year. The Korean tech giant unveiled the Galaxy Golden 2, boasting a dual touch screen smartphone - the first screen is placed at the top of the lid, while the second screen can be found inside.
However, compared to the LG Ice Cream Smart, the Galaxy Golden 2 is more powerful in terms of specs. The Samsung flip phone boasts an HD (1280 x 720) resolution, 3.9-inch AMOLED screens, a 16MP primary camera, Snapdragon 801 and 2GB of RAM.
