The romantic movie "Love Actually" brought a lot of couples together, but it also brought one particular couple apart - Harry and Emma.
Harry (played by Alan Rickman) and Karen (played by Emma Thompson) are a married couple whose relationship got strained when Harry strayed from their marriage. Karen actually found out about her husband's cheating when she saw him buy a diamond necklace for another woman, and she confronted him about it during the children's school play.
The movie tried to be ambiguous about the outcome of their marriage, showing the two celebrating the holidays with their children despite Karen's knowledge of her husband's unfaithfulness.
Script editor Emma Freud was asked by Twitter user Jill Perlstrom just recently what happened to Harry and Karen, and if they were able to resolve their issues. "Can u please explain outcome for Emma and Alan's characters or must I remain eternally confused? I never did work that one out!" she asked.
Freud answered back, "They stay together but home isn't as happy as it once was."
Not satisfied with the answer, another social media user named Carlotta B. pressed on: "Did anyone ask if Harry ACTUALLY had an affair or was just tempted to? Alan Rickman villains are usually lovable but not this one!" she wrote, possibly referring to the actor's role as Professor Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" series.
But sadly, Freud confirmed that Harry "DEFINITELY had an affair" with his co-worker Mia (played by Heike Makatsch).
"I begged Richard Curtis (director) just to make it a flirtation, but no. The whole way," she said.
A heartwarming nod was given to the salesman character played by "Mr. Bean" star Rowan Atkinson. According to Freud, there is a pretty good reason why his character Rufus tried his best to keep Harry from purchasing the necklace.
"Originally Rowan's character over-wrapped the gift on purpose to stop Alan Rickman being able to buy the necklace. Because he was an angel," she said.
"Love Actually" featured a star-studded cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and many others.
Incidentally, Hugh Grant's character David is both the Prime Minister and the brother of Karen. He falls in love with his staff Natalie (played by Martine McCutcheon) even though he tried his best not to think about her. It was during the play of his niece and nephew that the two finally share their first kiss.
