Manchester United want to keep goalkeeper David De Gea, but reports indicated that Real Madrid still have a good chance of acquiring the keeper from the Red Devils.
Agent Jorge Mendes recognized that De Gea is still committed to Manchester United because he has a live contract with the club, but he admitted that they are not ruling out a possible move to Real Madrid.
"David is amazing, he's brilliant," Mendes said of De Gea in a Marca interview. "He's a Man United player and has a contract there. You have to respect that but things change every five minutes."
Manchester United and Real Madrid are being linked to possible moves this month and possible deals next summer. The Red Devils are reportedly interested in striking a lucrative deal to acquire star forward Gareth Bale, but Real Madrid will reportedly give up the Wales international only if Manchester United agree to let go of De Gea.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is nearing the twilight of his career. The veteran goalkeeper will also likely lose his starting spot in the Spanish national soccer team to De Gea, and Real Madrid want to make sure that they have Spain's No. 1 goalkeeper in their club.
De Gea, who has tallied 62 saves in 22 Barclays Premier League games this season, has been a key figure at Old Trafford since former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson struck a deal to acquire him from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but the 24-year-old has yet to get or agree to a new deal with the Red Devils.
De Gea still has 18 months left in his contract with Manchester United, but most analysts believe the Red Devils are already preparing for the Spaniard's eventual exit, which is reportedly one of the main reasons why the club signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes to a deal.
When asked about De Gea's future at Old Trafford earlier this month, Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is still confident that their top goalkeeper will sign a new deal with the Red Devils.
"'I think so, yes. I think there is no problem for him to sign. It's the same as other players. You can ask other players and I can answer the same," Van Gaal told Daily Mail Online. "It's always like that; when you are a fixed line-up player, then probably you are the best and then the manager is very happy that a player that is fixed in the line-up will stay. It's always like that."
