Freddie Roach believes that one fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not enough, saying that the two fighters should agree to a multi-fight deal.
Roach is hoping that the long-proposed showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao will finally happen in 2015. And if he will have it his way, the Hall of Fame trainer wants at least two bouts between the two boxing superstars.
"Doing a multi-fight contract, I thought that was the best idea in the world. I would love to see these guys fight more than once," Roach told HBO's The Fight Game. "If they split the first two, we could have a third. There could be a rubber match. We could have three big fights. It's been done before, it could be done again."
But for the Pacquiao-Mayweather Trilogy to happen, the reigning pound-for-pound king and the Filipino boxing icon's camp should find a common ground in order to finalize the first showdown in May next year.
Mayweather, who holds a perfect 47-0 fight record with 26 knockout victories, recently expressed interest in colliding with his main rival on Cinco de Mayo weekend next year.
Roach said that Mayweather has no other choice but to face Pacquiao before he retires. The veteran boxing trainer pointed out that even if Mayweather ends up with a perfect record, his legacy will be questioned in the future if he decides not to face Pacquiao.
"That's the thing with boxing, if you are champion of the world you fight everybody, you don't duck anybody and you fight all comers," Roach said. "If he retires not fighting Manny, that will be a big question when he's asked for things. I think that will ruin his legacy."
And if the first fight happens in May, most analysts believe that Pacquiao should win because Mayweather will not give him a rematch if the unbeaten champion emerges victorious in the potential record-breaking fight.
Roach is confident, though, that Pacquiao will win against Mayweather, saying that they will have a perfect fight plan and that their 37-year-old opponent will have a hard time dealing with the eight-division champion's skills.
"I can't wait to get ready for Floyd Mayweather," Roach added. "He is a challenge. I have a great fighter, but we have to fight the perfect fight to win. I know that. We have to do certain things to win. We have to be a little bit meaner and a bit feistier."
