A team of French archeologists are working to solve the mystery of a huge mass of skeletons found inside an ancient Roman catacomb. Archeological experts are guessing that these are the remains of Christian martyrs, but the exact circumstances of this mass burial are not yet clarified.

A total of 2,000 bodies were uncovered in 6 tombs. What is unusual about this discovery is that normally martyrs were buried in small niches on the walls, whereas in this case, the thousands of bodies identified as men, women, and even children were stacked on top of each other in a small space.

Archeologists argue the possibility of a great crisis that brought about the deaths of many Roman Christians in a short span of time.
