Rebecca Ferguson was the surprise hit in Christopher McQuarrie's blockbuster movie "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation." Her secret agent character Ilsa Faust worked so well with lead star Tom Cruise, who portrayed Ethan Hunt that many are eager to see her reprise her role in the sixth installment of the franchise.
However, as much as McQuarrie would love to see this happen, the director told Collider that they haven't finalized the details of the sixth film yet.
"There is nothing confirmed. I literally just started writing the screenplay and will be working on the screenplay for quite some time. I have not spoken to anybody but Tom, and I just started writing the script. But I certainly would love for her to be back, I would love to work with Rebecca again," he said.
According to McQuarrie, when they saw Ferguson on her demo tape, they did not hesitate in hiring her.
"When we saw her on tape, Tom and I instantly looked at her and knew she was what we were looking for," he shared. "It was very late in the process, the very last day when we had to make a decision and happened to cross her audition. And then everything after that was just confirmation that she really was amazing."
One of the things that McQuarrie learned from making "Rogue Nation" was that it was essential to have a finished screenplay before attempting to start making a movie.
"You know, we dove into this one with very little time and were figuring out the story as we went and it was just really an intense experience," he recalled. But being under pressure had its benefits too.
"At the same time, I don't think we would've come up with some of the things that we did if we had sat down and thought them out in advance. Forget all that - the lesson I learned is that a plan is not a guarantee of success and chaos is not a guarantee of failure," he said.
McQuarrie noted that it was important not to panic and to have confidence in the people one is working with. Problems are always there, he said, but the important thing is that one knows how to respond to it.
"You have to get to work every day and work the problem," he said. "And if you're surrounded by good people and you're really honest with yourself, you'll be delivered. And ultimately, we never took for granted the kind of movie we were making - we were really exacting and really painstaking and we were always thinking about the audience every step of the way."
