Four decades of NBA championship drought ended for the Golden State Warriors after Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday, June 16 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Warriors won 105 - 97 against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the best-of-seven basketball game series. MVP point guard Stephen Curry and shooting guard Andre Iguodala each scored 25 points each for the Warriors, ensuring the team's victory against the Cavs.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver presented the Warriors with the Larry O'Brien Trophy as nearly 500 fans chanted the team's name at Cleveland. Back home, the San Francisco Bay Area was lit in blue and gold lights to celebrate the victory. Oakland will have a parade for the Warriors on Friday at 10 a.m.
"I'm kind of speechless. This is special. To be able to hold this trophy and all the hard work we've put into it this season, this is special," said 27-year-old Curry. "We're definitely a great team and a team that should go down in history as one of the best teams from top to bottom."
31-year-old Iguodala, who stands at 6'6" took on the role of guarding LeBron James. Forward Draymond Green who scored 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists called him a "pro's pro." The Warriors made 7 offensive rebounds and locked out the Cavs with a 15-point lead.
Head coach Steve Kerr described the moment as "pure joy." He recollected moments of his glory days in the NBA and playing against the team at Oakland's Oracle Arena. He was happy that the team's loyal fan base got to taste a long-awaited victory. The Warriors last won a title in 1975.
