The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for the right mix of players in order for them to succeed in the upcoming season. And according to Hall of Fame running back Herschel Walker, the Cowboys should take a serious look at signing Robert Griffin III this summer.
The Cowboys are reportedly looking for a quarterback who will back up and eventually take Tony Romo's spot in the roster in the near future. The 35-year-old has been battling injuries over the past several years, including another collarbone injury that required surgery earlier in the offseason.
Walker said in an ambush interview with TMZ Sports that RG3 will be a great fit in Dallas and both parties will benefit if they will be able to strike a deal this offseason.
"I think RG3 would fit in well with the Cowboys," Walker said. "The Cowboys need a quarterback, and I think he would fit in well with them."
Griffin, who was the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, showed tremendous potential during his first two seasons in the league. He was named 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after tallying 3,200 passing yards for 20 touchdowns in his rookie season. In his second year, he posted 3,203 passing yards for 16 touchdowns.
However, the former Baylor standout failed to make an impact from then on as his career was derailed by injuries. RG3 played in just nine games in 2014 and did not make even a single appearance for the Washington Redskins last season. The Redskins eventually parted with the quarterback earlier this month.
But while RG3 has been relatively quiet in the past two seasons, Walker is confident that Griffin could still become an elite quarterback in the NFL if he will sign with a team who has confidence in him.
"RG3 just needs to find a team that believes in him," Walker said. "Once he does that, he'll be all right."
Griffin is expected to draw the interest of several teams this offseason. RG3 reportedly visited the New York Jets and impressed team officials, the Oregon Live reported. The Jets have yet to offer a deal but will likely make a strong push to sign a quarterback after negotiation with starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick went down.
The Los Angeles Rams were also mentioned as another potential landing spot. According to LA Daily News, the Rams are looking to improve their quarterback options and Griffin wants to play for the team starting next season.
