The Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly sign quarterback Tim Tebow to a one-year deal on Monday when National Football League teams begin their preparation for the 2015 NFL Season.
NFL insider Jay Glazer was the first to report about the pending deal between Tebow and the Eagles on Sunday night. Sources said the Eagles were impressed with the improvement shown by Tebow in a workout last month after spending time with quarterbacks coach Tom House.
Tebow, who last played in the NFL during the 2012 NFL season when he appeared in 12 games for the New York Jets, was brought in by the Eagles for a workout last month.
The Eagles did not offer a contract or a roster spot to Tebow after the workout last month, but Eagles coach Chip Kelly admitted that he has always been a fan of the former Heisman Trophy winner.
"I've always been a fan of Tim," Kelly said of Tebow. "We bring in a lot of players for private workouts, it's just he's the one that everyone keeps talking about. We brought in Terrelle Pryor for a workout and Thad Lewis in for a workout. When players are available for you to work them out, it's the same thing of going to the veteran combine."
Tebow, who spent the first two seasons of his three-year NFL career with the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011, completed just six of eight passes for 39 yards during his 12 appearances for the Jets in 2012.
The 27-year-old quarterback was with the New England Patriots before the 2013 NFL season, but was cut before the regular season started. After that, he has never received strong interests from NFL teams and began working as an analyst for ESPN's college football broadcasts.
But while Tebow is expected to make the final roster of the Eagles, it is unclear at this point whether or not he will appear even in a single game for Philadelphia next season.
The Eagles traded for quarterback Sam Bradford in the deal that sent Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams and also re-signed Mark Sanchez. Bradford and Sanchez are expected to be the top two quarterbacks on their depth chart for the upcoming season.
The Eagles also have Matt Barkley in their fold. Most analysts believe Tebow will be the third quarterback option at best and his chances of getting that spot on the depth chart could also change if the Eagles decide to select a quarterback in the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft.
