The Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans are interested in acquiring Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Brian Hoyer in the offseason, reports confirmed.
Adam Schefter, a trusted NFL analyst from ESPN, reported that the Browns will likely part ways with Hoyer despite the fact that the 29-year-old QB is having the best season of his career.
Hoyer, who is playing in his second season in Cleveland, has completed 55.7 percent of his passes for 2,542 yards with 11 touchdowns, helping the Browns win in six of their first nine games this season.
According to Schefter, Texans coach Bill O'Brien is eyeing are reunion with Hoyer, whom he coached during their stints with the New England Patriots. Following their showdown on Sunday, O'Brien praised Hoyer for working hard to become one of the best quarterbacks in the league this season.
"It was great to work with him," O'Brien told the Detroit Free Press, referring to Hoyer. "He was an undrafted guy out of Michigan State. I can remember the day I went to Michigan State to work him out. Just a great kid, where he is right now, as a successful starting quarterback in this league, doesn't surprise me at all. He's a hell of a guy."
Aside from the Texans, Schefter also revealed that the Titans are also expected to make a strong push to acquire Hoyer after the 2014 NFL season. Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt also worked with Hoyer in Arizona two seasons ago.
The Browns are still unsure about what they intend to do with Hoyer, whose contract will expire after the current season. The Browns are currently fourth in the American Football Conference North standings with a 6-4 record, creating speculation that Cleveland will eventually trade him if they fail to make the playoffs this season.
Browns general manager Ray Farmer was noncommittal when asked about Hoyer's future in Cleveland, and added that rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel will likely be their franchise quarterback.
"Brian's contract expires at the end of the season, Johnny's doesn't," Farmer told Cleveland.com, referring to the quarterback situation. "We'll see what happens with Brian between now and then."
