Who would have guessed that the millions of fans hankering for the return of the prodigal Zayn Malik to the English band One Direction might find the answer to their prayers in theoretical physics? In a rather unusual turn of events during the question and answer portion of the discussion held with Stephen Hawking via hologram from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom and projected at the Sydney Opera House, a member of the audience asked the esteemed scientist about the "cosmological effect" of Malik's departure from the band, according to Buzz Feed.
"What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?" the audience member asked, leaving a scattering of chuckles and amused reactions from the rest of those in attendance. For his part, however, the widely renowned physicist and cosmologist responded with candid humor and sheer wit.
Hawking responded, "Finally, a question about something important." He then went on to share his advice to the said fans who had their hearts broken over the English heartthrob's departure from the group. "My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics. Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes," Hawking said.
He further stated that, "It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe." Therefore, there could be a million other potential outcomes derived from one instance. With this in mind, Hawking appeased the grieving fans of the boy band that their desire to see Malik still performing with the group could be a possibility. "And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction," he shared.
However, Hawking did not stop the discussion regarding Malik and One Direction. He even furthered his theory and shared that a good news to one of the fans mourning the loss. He said that "in another possible universe," one of the sad fans reeling over the departure of Malik may actually be "happily married" with the ex-band member.
Prior to the discussion regarding the One Direction members and their fans, Hawking had been giving the audience advice. "So remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet," he said in his presentation. "Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes a universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up."
