For what has become one of the most popular film franchises in history, "Pitch Perfect 2' has now raked in more than $250 million in the global box office with its $29 million budget.
With such considerable success, Universal Pictures has confirmed that the third "Pitch Perfect' installment is in the works. As a trilogy capper for the singing Bellas, writer Kay Cannon, who previously worked on the first two movies, will be back to work on the screenplay for "Pitch Perfect 3.'
The Emmy-nominated scribe and actress is also known for her work on Fox's "New Girl' and NBC's '30 Rock.'
Aside from Cannon, negotiations have reportedly been in store for actress Rebel Wilson who is expected to reprise her beloved Fat Amy role in the franchise. According to Los Angeles Times writer Amy Kaufman, Wilson did share the news with her that she is set to make a comeback for the a capella film franchise's third installment.
It remains unconfirmed, though, whether Universal and the Gold Circle production company will be in talks with producer Elizabeth Banks to take on the director's chair once again for "Pitch Perfect 3.'
The 41-year-old helmer is known for making her directorial debut with "Pitch Perfect 2.'
"Of course we're at the very beginning of that process. We would love to spend more time with these characters that everyone's fallen so hard in love with," Banks told Access Hollywood when asked about a third "Pitch Perfect' installment.
In addition, it remains unconfirmed whether Wilson's co-star, Anna Kendrick, will still be in talks to reprise her rebellious and bold character Beca.
Nonetheless, Universal previously announced that Hailee Steinfeld has already signed on to multiple films, hence the better chances for Emily Junk to be joining the Barden Bellas for one more sing-off.
"None of this was a vanity project. I want to tell stories and have more control of my life," Banks, who also made an appearance in the first two movies, said in an interview last month. "I made a funny movie - about girls - and it's going to make money? It just doesn't happen."
The highly anticipated second installment of the film franchise made a total gross of over $70 million during its opening weekend alone.
"Directing is a really big decision," Banks further shared. "Because it's a year and a half of my life, and it's taking my kids out of their daily routine."
