"Previously, it wasn't a good thing when police officers came to our church, but they are always welcome for joyful occassions like today's."
Such were the words of Oriental Mission Church senior pastor, Reverend Jim-Bob Park. Oriental Mission Church has long persevered through serious church conflicts -- to the extent that police officers came to the church during worship -- but has overcome the hardships with reconciliation and unity. The church held a thanksgiving worship service on July 26 to celebrate its 45th anniversary.
The service consisted of awarding scholarships to 13 daughters and sons of officers in the Los Angeles Police Department and Fire Department, as an expression of appreciation to the greater community. The church also dedicated a building in honor of Dr. Dong-Sun Lim, the founder of Oriental Mission Church, called "Dr. Dong-Sun Lim Vision Center."
Members of the community, including police officers, firefighters, Los Angeles City Councilmember David Ryu (4th District), businessmen, and professors, were present at the ceremonial service. The church also held a concert and exhibit of the church history, which was open to the local community.
"It's a pleasure to share the 45 years of Oriental Mission Church's history with so many people," said Reverend Jim-Bob Park. "We want to take this opportunity to show that we're a healthy church, inside and out. And we will serve the greater community with all our best."
