Samsung has been working very hard lately in order to move up on top of the Android market in China again after it was dethroned by local brand Xiaomi in the final quarter of 2014.
Even in other Asian countries, Samsung is slowly losing its grip due to the influx of cheap but quality smartphones from local companies.
In an attempt to cater to the region's mass market composed of budget-conscious consumers, the Korean tech giant has now announced a brand new Galaxy J lineup.
GSM Arena reported that Samsung has just revealed the Samsung Galaxy J1, a budget phone that is expected to captivate the hearts and pockets of prudent consumers. In the report, the device is already listed on Samsung's website in Malaysia, but there are still no exact details about pricing. It is still unclear whether the device will make its way to other markets in Asia as well.
In the report, the device packs some entry-level specs which include a 4.3-inch display with WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.2GHz for each core, a 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage.
Other specs include a microSD card slot, a 5MP primary camera at the back and a 2MP front shooter. The Galaxy J1 also boasts the usual connectivity features such as GLONASS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The new handset will reportedly be powered by a 1850mAh battery, which should run for about 10 hours talk time, and will run Android 4.4 Kit Kat out of the box.
Despite the phone's humble specs and design, the phone is reportedly packed with some cool features. A user can simply detect the position of the hand and swipe over the screen in order to take a selfie. The user can also tap anywhere on the screen to take a picture.
Like recent Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy J1 also comes with an Ultra Power Saving mode. The phone is available in several color options -- blue, white and black.
