A heavily armed man and woman shot and killed 14 people and wounded at least 21 on Wednesday at a social services center.
The suspects of the attack were identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, 38, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27. Farook was a county health inspector for five years at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, a facility that provides services for people with developmental disabilities, where the mass shooting took place.
Farook had attended a holiday party at the department office on Wednesday morning, but left early according to a police official. He returned with Ms. Malik around 11 a.m., heavily armed, and opened fire, killing 14 people. The attackers had left three explosive devices inside the building that did not detonate.
The suspects fled in a black SUV and were pursued by the police. The car chase resulted in a shootout, leaving both suspects dead hours after the attack had been executed.
The motive for the shooting has not yet been identified, according to authorities.
Farook's brother-in-law, Farhan Khan, expressed shock over the shooting as well.
"I just cannot express how sad I am for what happened today," he said late Wednesday during a press conference with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
A day after the mass shooting, thousands gathered at San Manuel Stadium for a candlelight and prayer vigil to mourn the victims.
"We may be hard pressed on every side," said Joshua Beckley, a local pastor, giving a message of hope and reassurance to the audience. "But we are not crushed."
