Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is ready to face fellow middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but trainer Eddy Reynoso laid out a strict condition.
Reynoso, who is the trainer of Alvarez, said that Canelo is willing to defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title against Golovkin. But he insisted that Golovkin should go down to 155 pounds instead, because Canelo is not yet thinking of moving up to 160 anytime soon.
"We are ready to fight anyone at 155 pounds," Reynoso told BoxingScene. "We are very comfortable at this weight. If he wants to come to this weight we will fight anybody."
Golovkin is the reigning International Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation middleweight champion. He is coming off an eighth-round stoppage win against David Lemieux in October, which was his 20th consecutive knockout victory.
The 33-year-old Kazakh has also expressed willingness to face Alvarez, who won the WBC middleweight crown via a unanimous decision win against Miguel Cotto on Saturday.
Cotto's trainer, Freddie Roach, had nothing but praises for Canelo. The Hall of Fame trainer also added that he is eager to see the showdown between Golovkin and Canelo. He is expecting a fight full of fireworks because both fighters are willing to go toe-to-toe against each other.
"I think from his last fight he looked better in this fight," Roach said of Canelo's performance against Cotto. "Again, him and Triple G - I'd love to see that fight. That's a great fight. You got two tough guys, two real strong guys. Both guys can punch very well. I'd like to see that fight."
Golovkin, who holds an impressive 34-0 record with 31 knockout victory, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC middleweight crown. WBC recently declared that Canelo should defend his title against Golovkin.
Previous reports indicated that the showdown could happen on Cinco De Mayo weekend, but WBC announced that they are also open to a doubleheader, featuring the two superstars. And if both fighters win, they will have no other choice but to face each other in September next year, particularly on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
