Trainer Eddy Reynoso said that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is open to facing Gennady "GGG" Golovkin but insisted that they will not give any advantage to the Kazakh knockout artist.
Reynoso insisted that Alvarez will not agree to face Golovkin at 160 pounds, remaining firm on their previous stance that the showdown will only happen at a catchweight of 155 pounds.
Reynoso pointed out that Alvarez is the bigger draw, which gives them the right to control the terms of the bout. The veteran trainer added that Canelo's previous opponents, who are more famous than Golovkin, agreed to collide with the Mexican boxing superstar at their desirable weight.
"We have always been facing the toughest fighters: Mayweather, Cotto - who are much better than Golovkin," Reynoso said via BoxingScene. "Also with Trout, Lara, Angulo - at the time we face them we had no problems with the negotiations."
While Alvarez is the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, Reynoso said that Canelo has no plans to fight at the full middleweight limit of 160 pounds in his upcoming fights.
Golovkin, who owns a perfect 34-0 record with 31 knockout victories, is the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight title. WBC has already announced earlier this year that if Alvarez and Golovkin win in their upcoming fights, the champion has to defend the title to GGG, which gives the latter some leverage.
In the event Alvarez declines to face Golovkin later this year, the 25-year-old will be stripped off his title and GGG will be declared as the new 160-pound champion. But while there is a risk of losing his world title, Alvarez also sounded firm that he is not open to facing Golovkin at 160 in September.
"I've made many concessions," Alvarez said via North Jersey. "I've given up many advantages. I've done it throughout my career to get to this point where I'm at. I'm not going to give any concessions or any advantages to Golovkin. I'm in the position now where I've earned my spot."
It is worth noting, though, that Alvarez mentioned in the same interview that the fight against Golovkin will eventually take place in the near future. Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya also expressed confidence that the highly-awaited showdown will happen, BoxingScene reported.
