Science News 2015: NASA Says Earth Will Have Near Miss with Giant Asteroid on Halloween

Comet

NASA Has recently spotted a massive asteroid that will dangerously zip past Earth on Halloween.

According to the space agency, this is the first time that an asteroid will fly near the planet in nine years.

The gigantic space rock, named 2015 TB145, was only spotted by NASA scientists on October 10. Although they still do not know its actual size, they estimated that it could have a diameter between 280 to 620 meters.

Based on the agency's observations, the asteroid will zip past Earth at a speed of 78,000 miles per hour and will only be 310,000 miles away as it passes by, the Daily Mail reported.

The last time an asteroid flew past Earth at such as close distance was in 2006 and scientists predict that the next time this will happen again is on 2027.

NASA is confident that despite the upcoming near miss, 2015 TB145 will not have any devastating effects on Earth. However, the agency noted that its orbit is highly erratic.

"The asteroid is on an extremely eccentric and a high inclination orbit," the agency wrote in a report.

This means that it's hard to predict where the asteroid will exactly go due to its orbit. But, even with this unsettling information, NASA is convinced that the people of Earth have nothing to worry about.

According to the agency, 2015 TB145 will pass by Earth on October 31 and its proximity to the planet will provide various scientific organizations the rare opportunity to observe and study the asteroid.

"The flyby presents a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object," NASA wrote.

Although the asteroid will be flying near Earth this Halloween, scientists note that people will not be able to see it with the naked eye. Instead, the agency suggests using telescopes to view the passing asteroid.

Given the eerie coincidence that 2015 TB145 will fly near Earth on Halloween, it will not come as a surprise if various groups will take this opportunity to once again predict the world's end.

Earlier this month, Chris McCann, leader of the religious group eBible Fellowship, predicted that the Earth will be completely destroyed by a gigantic asteroid on October 7, the Telegraph has learned. But, on October 8, McCann released a statement admitting that his prediction was wrong.

"Since it is now October 8th, it is now obvious that we were incorrect regarding the world's ending on the 7th," he wrote in the group's website.
