Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said that he will play as hard as he can no matter how much money he will earn in the 2015 NFL season.
Responding to questions about his dedication next season because of contract uncertainties, Wilson told Marty Smith of ESPN that his level of play does not depend on how much money he is getting paid.
"I continue to love the game for what it is and continue to fight and continue to play no matter how much I'm getting paid, no matter if it's $25 million or if it's $1.5 million," Wilson said. "I'll be ready to go."
Wilson, who helped the Seahawks win the Super Bowl last year, will earn just $1.54 million in the final year of his rookie contract with Seattle in the upcoming season. The 26-year-old is expected to get a big pay check. But when asked about his projected salary, he declined to give figures and insisted he will just let his game prove his worth.
"Ultimately, it comes down to the play," Wilson said. "I let my play speak for itself and let the rest take care of itself."
Previous reports indicated that Wilson and his camp is asking for a five-year deal worth $110 million with $50 million guaranteed. It will reportedly make the former Wisconsin standout the highest-paid player in the league.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Seahawks will give into his demanded salary, which is creating speculation that Wilson is getting frustrated in Seattle. The star quarterback denied such rumors, saying that he loves his team and will want to continue playing in Seattle if he will have it his way.
"I trust the process of it all. I'm going to do everything I can to put the work in and let the rest speak for itself," Wilson said. "When it's all done and my career is over, hopefully, 17 years from now, I can look back and, hopefully, it's a job well done. That's all I can do and all I can ask for, to give it my all every day. It'll work out if I do that."
Wilson, who has racked up 36 victories in his first three seasons with the Seattle and has led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, tallied 3,475 passing yards last season with 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. The Richmond, Virginia native also rushed for 849 yards for six touchdowns.
