The "Sherlock Holmes' franchise, starring Robert Downey Jr., aims to push through with a third installment as producer Lionel Wigram announced that a movie script is currently in the works.
"We're working on a 'Sherlock Holmes 3' script," Wigram said in an interview with IGN. "I think we would all love to do one if we could come up with something that really was really going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three. So we're working on that - it's quite hard to do."
This is not the first time a script for "Sherlock Holmes 3' has been announced.
"We had a meeting earlier this year, the three of us," Jude Law, who takes on the role of Watson, told Digital Spy in 2013. "And I think it's being written now. Warner Bros. have still got to agree to pay for it... I think they want to!"
Downey previously stated that they sought for the third movie to be considerably better than the first two installments, "Sherlock Holmes' and "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,' hence the need to take some more time in planning and penning.
"Yes, we have a 'Sherlock 3' in development. We want it to be the best of the series, so that's a pretty tall order," the "Iron Man" actor said in an interview with E! Online last year. "Also, Perry Mason is a property I'm looking forward to developing further, going back to the 1931 book series "¦ similarly to what we did with the first 2 'Sherlocks,' mining the original material for things that are "new.'"
In a recent interview, Wigram confirmed that both Downey and Law have taken strong interest in returning for a third installment and reprising their roles as Holmes and Watson.
Downey also made the headlines for dropping hints on a possible sequel earlier this year after taking to social media and sharing a picture on Facebook that seemed to be taken in the set of a new "Sherlock Holmes' movie. The actor wrote a short caption, stating, "Master of disguise"¦", thereby making fans speculate that the third installment could already be in the production stage.
While Law is currently filming the epic adventure film "Knights of The Roundtable: King Arthur,' Downey is also kept busy as "Captain America: Civil War' is in the middle of its production stages.
In addition, for the third consecutive year, Downey has soared to the top of Forbes' list of highest paid actors for 2015, raking in an average paycheck of $80 million. He also managed to pull in $75 million in 2013 and with approximately the same amount in 2014.
