"Star Wars' producers recently made the official announcement that the third installment in the trilogy set to begin this year will have Colin Trevorrow as its director.
After announcing the "Star Wars: Episode IX' update at the D23 Expo, fans immediately expressed skepticism and doubts over Trevorrow's capability in succeeding as a helmer in the "Star Wars' universe.
"Star Wars: Episode IX' will be the concluding chapter of a new trilogy, scheduled to start this December when "Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' makes its way to theaters.
"Episode IX' is currently in the early planning stages and is facing the possibility of a release in 2019.
Trevorrow was tapped to sign on to the "Star Wars' franchise following the considerable success of "Jurassic World,' one of the most popular movies this summer. Despite raking in $1.5 billion in the global box office, Star Wars fans are not all convinced.
Even with the financial success, critics believe that the director has not strongly lived up to the success of 1993's "Jurassic Park.'
Majority of the criticism against Trevorrow stressed his approach towards "Jurassic World,' some even referring to it as the worst film of 2015.
As pointed out by one commenter: "This is a bad choice. "Jurassic World' was terribly directed and written. It had unbearable characters, looked bland, and used CGI where it wasn't needed. It made money but that doesn't mean Trevorrow should be given "Episode IX.'"
Nonetheless, Trevorrow is expected to undergo certain types of training when he begins work at Lucasfilm, including some time with "Star Wars' production artists as they start developing the movie later this year.
"We've been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had "” a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope," Trevorrow shared about his selection as "Star Wars' director.
In between the highly-anticipated J.J. Abrams-helmed film this year and Trevorrow's work in four years, Rian Johnson has been set to direct "Star Wars: Episode VIII' that will hit theaters in 2017.
A spinoff film titled "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' is already in the works, together with more spinoffs to follow. "Rogue One' will be unveiled following "Episode VII' and before "Episode VIII', hence the non-stop stream of films to hold fans' interest.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens' will be hitting cinemas on Dec. 18, while the Gareth Edwards-helmed "Rogue One' is already set for an official premiere on Dec. 16, 2016.
As for Rian Johnson's untitled "Star Wars: Episode VIII,' production on the movie will reportedly begin early next year in time for the sci-fi film's official release on May 26, 2017.
