The congregation of Thanksgiving Church, a Korean immigrant church located in Buena Park, CA, has voted to transfer its membership from a Korean district council to an American district in the Assemblies of God denomination. 97.89 percent of the congregation (882 in favor, 19 against) voted in favor of transferring its membership during a special business meeting held on July 31, the church announced on Saturday.
Thanksgiving Church had been an active part of the Korean District Council in the Assemblies of God, and in the 35 years of the Korean District Council's history, Thanksgiving Church hosted three of the district council's annual meetings. The senior pastor of Thanksgiving Church Rev. Young Gil Kim had also served as the president of the Korean District Council for two terms.
Rev. Kim said he hopes that the younger generation in Thanksgiving Church would be able to "receive the spiritual inheritance" of the Assemblies of God denomination, and said that the church will "continue to share a brotherly relationship with the Korean District Council."
Thanksgiving Church has submitted a transfer request to the Southern California District. Out of the 67 District Councils in the Assemblies of God, two of them are for the Korean community, including the Korean District Council and the Second Korean District Council.
