Things get even more complicated for Rick (Andrew Lincoln) as "The Walking Dead' returns for its sixth season this October, especially after Pete's (Corey Brill) death.
In a recent interview Entertainment Weekly, the hit zombie drama's showrunner Scott M. Gimple dropped hints that Pete's death in season five's finale will only bring on more challenges in the apparent romance of Rick and Jessie (Alexandra Breckenridge).
"I think it actually complicates things between them," Gimple shared. "But there's no doubt that in episode 15, the penultimate episode, there was this intimacy there. And she said, 'Hey, would you do this for anyone else?' and he was straight with her, he said, 'No, I wouldn't.'"
The showrunner also seemed to pose a question for fans as he highlighted the possibilities of Rick seeing something worthwhile in Jessie.
"Whether that's because he saw something in her that seemed worth saving, or whether it was more personal, because Rick was more bottom-line with more people at that point," Gimple said. "Would he do that for anybody? I don't think so."
Lincoln also shared his own sentiments about Rick and Jessie's relationship and how it will turn out at the start of the highly anticipated season.
"It's not looking promising!" he told The Hollywood Reporter. "That first candlelit dinner could be a bit awkward. It's never easy for Rick, is it?"
Echoing co-star Norman Reedus' thoughts about the sixth season being "complicated," Lincoln reflected on how the past events will influence the storyline for the upcoming episodes.
"He has feelings for the first time in two years, and the woman in question is married, and within a short space of time, Rick has a street brawl and shoots her husband. It's not tender in the apocalypse -- it's a bit more complicated than that," the British actor explained.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln shared the same thoughts, referring to post-apocalyptic dating as a difficult process. The 41-year-old actor also expressed his excitement to get on with the story and find out what happens with Rick and Jessie.
"We've got a bit to talk about," Lincoln said. ""¦ I'm excited to read that first scene. I'm glad I'm not a writer on the show."
