Actor David Morrissey, widely known as the evil Governor on "The Walking Dead,' recently went on a humanitarian mission and helped rescue Syrian families from a refugee boat off the coast of Greece.
As an ambassador for UNHCR, the United Nation's refugee agency, the British actor can be seen in a new video released by the agency to shed light on the troubles encountered by children and adults running away from the longstanding hostility and bloodshed in Syria.
Over 80,000 migrants have set foot on Greece, a nation known for already suffering from an economic crisis that threatens to wipe out the country's financial systems.
"This situation is not going away and get closer and closer to the U.K. and the rest of Europe," Morrissey says while on board a rescue vessel. "It has to be dealt with collectively and Greece has to be supported "¦ The Greek authorities are already battling with their own economic crisis," the 51-year-old actor said.
Morrissey also shared his sentiments about the rising numbers of refugees, saying that it "is too much of a burden for one country to face at the best of times, never mind at this testing period in Greek history."
The father-of-three also found the refugess' experience greatly upsetting, especially after meeting children like Mohamed, who had crossed the dangerous waters from Aleppo without his parents. According to the boy, he had not seen his mother and father for the past two years.
"I couldn't imagine not seeing or hearing from my 13-year-old child for two years, wondering where they are in the world and not knowing if they are safe or not," he said. "Praying that they are met with kindness and compassion."
Morrissey took on the role of the dictatorial Governor on AMC's "The Walking Dead.' His character was killed off during the show's fourth season.
Meanwhile, more actors are being added to the cast as Merritt Wever and Ethan Embry will both make an appearance in the sixth season of the hit AMC series.
Wever previously bagged an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2013 for her performance as nurse Zoey Barkow in the dark comedy "Nurse Jackie' on Showtime.
Embry is widely recognized for his role as Declan Giggs on the drama series "Brotherhood,' which also airs on Showtime.
"The Walking Dead' is set to return for its sixth season on Oct 11, Sunday, at 9 pm on AMC with a special 90-minute episode.
