The sixth season of "The Walking Dead' opened with a bang as the zombie drama brought on a 90-minute supersized episode that gave fans an exhilarating glimpse of the troubled days in Alexandria.
Picking up shortly after the shocking events last season, the tension between Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group of survivors and the gated community's original residents continues to bubble.
The season six premiere episode showed a series of flashback and present-day sequences as the survivors battle it out with the biggest horde of zombies to date. Clearly, the personal differences among them remain to be a threat to Rick's arrangements in preventing the walkers from breaking into the walled community.
Moreover, while things were going as planned, an unexplained horn lured the zombies into Alexandria and, although the person responsible was not revealed in the episode, speculations are rampant that it could be the Wolves.
In some ways, the TV version has already deviated from the source material; for instance, in the comics, Jessie (Alexandra Breckendridge) and her son find a way to escape with Carl while the walkers are being fought off.
However, in the middle of the commotion, Douglas, known as Deanna's comic book counterpart, is bitten by a walker. During the fight, he accidentally shoots Carl's eye while Jessie gets fatally wounded by the approaching horde of walkers.
Fans who have gone over the comics are also aware that Jessie, Rick's love interest, will soon be killed off if the source material will be followed.
Meanwhile, now that the new season has begun, Glenn's (Steven Yeun) possible death has been making fans more worried than ever as his comics version meets death at the hand of the Saviors' leader, Negan.
As for Danai Gurira's sentiments on "The Walking Dead' season six, the actress described the new installment as an "amazing" one.
"It's very rich and deep and full of everything you can imagine," Gurira, who plays Michonne in the zombie drama, said in an interview with People.
The previous season ended with discord among the series' main group of survivors and the other residents of Alexandria, and Gurira shares how it has been thrilling to see how such drama is being unfurled in the new season.
"We are working really, really hard and the scripts are riveting and gut-wrenching," the actress said. "It's powerful storytelling that we get to work on every day. It's powerful stuff that's coming out of the writer's room."
"The Walking Dead' season six airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
