According to sources, Muslim radicals in eastern Uganda severely assaulted Shaquru Ndifuna, a 33-year-old former Islamic teacher, and admitted him to the hospital on May 2 for converting to Christianity. At a hospital in Iganga town, Ndifuna was receiving treatment for blood loss.

Ndifuna, a former instructor of Islam at the Noor Islamic Mosque in Mayuge District, made the decision to follow Christ in January at an outdoor evangelistic gathering in Namutumba. A preacher at the Noor Islamic Mosque started keeping an eye on his whereabouts as word of his conversion spread, and in April, three Islamic officials paid him a home visit.

Persecution of Christians Continues in Uganda Despite Legal Protections

In the article in Christian News, on May 2, four Muslim men broke into Ndifuna's home and demanded that he deny that Jesus is the Son of God and acknowledge that Allah is the only true God and that Muhammad is His prophet. When Ndifuna refused, they began to beat him. The incident brings to light the dangers Muslims face when deciding to convert to Christianity in regions where extremism is a problem.

Ndifuna reportedly had a shattered right hand, a significant cut on his forehead, and a neck injury. He has trouble breathing and eating solid food, and his vision has been compromised. At a hospital in Iganga town, Ndifuna is receiving blood loss treatment.

Ndifuna's wife and three kids hid in a bedroom during the onslaught. His wife made a call to a family friend for assistance, who came over later and transported Ndifuna to the clinic in Iganga after receiving first aid at a nearby pharmacy. Ndifuna revealed to Morning Star News that the Muslims who injured him aimed to coerce him into reverting to Islam, but he refused.

According to the shared article in Christian Headlines, despite the fact that Uganda's constitution and other laws provide religious freedom, including the right to practice one's religion openly and convert to another, discrimination still exists in some regions.

Only 12% of Uganda's population identify as Muslims, with concentrations in the east of the country. There are still concerns over the efficiency of legislative safeguards and the difficulties experienced by religious minorities in the area as cases of religious persecution persist.

Christian College Student in Uganda Murdered for Converting Muslims to Christianity

In the article in Morning Star News, Jeremiah Mwanga, a 24-year-old Christian college student at the Uganda Christian School of Professionals in Lira, was killed because he tried to convert Muslims to Christianity. Before Mwanga was discovered dead in his dorm on April 14 with evidence of abuse, it was claimed that he had complained about receiving threatening letters from a Muslim student.

Later, Chengalat, the suspect, was caught and transported to Lira to stand trial for murder. Despite Uganda's constitution and laws protecting religious freedom, this episode is only the most recent in a string of instances where Christians have been persecuted in the nation. Only 12% of Ugandans identify as Muslims, with concentrations higher in the east of the country.
