Advice on How to Talk to Your Children about School Shootings

Dr. Gregory Jantz, a renowned mental health counselor, recently posted resources online guiding parents on how to speak with their children about the recent school shootings.

According to Everytown, a pro-gun control non-profit organization, there have been 74 school shootings sine the Sandy Hook shooting incidence. As such, it is no surprise that parents today are more concerned than ever about how these incidences are affecting their own children.

Being aware of this, Dr. Jantz posted online, advising parents on how to help their children navigate through these issues. Although there may be parents who want to avoid this discussion, or had not even thought of having to talk about it, Dr. Jantz argues,

"Even though it may be a difficult conversation, and you may not know exactly what to say, addressing incidences of violence with your children is crucial. While they may not be learning about new events at home, it's quite possible these events are being discussed at school or on the playground."

Dr. Jantz advised them also to "withhold any angry, vengeful, or fearful comments," and that children "often mirror [parents'] reactions."

He continues, "If you are struggling to cope yourself, take time to address your own needs so that you can be emotionally available for your children. You don't need to pretend like you have all the answers, but being confident and positive during these difficult periods will encourage your children to do the same."
