During a press event this week, Samsung Electronics announced that it will be giving away free Galaxy S6 units to customers.
However, only those residing in South Korea and have been a loyal Galaxy S consumer are eligible for the company's special program, according to the South Korean news site the Chosun Ilbo.
The site reported that for its giveaway deal, Samsung has partnered with SK Telecom to track down the company's diehard supporters and those who are worthy of receiving a free and brand new Galaxy S6 smartphone.
According to the company, Samsung has around 15 million users in South Korea. These customers had at least owned one model from the Galaxy S series. Based on SK Telecom's records, 17,000 of them are still using their Galaxy S1 devices, which were first launched by Samsung in 2010, NDTV reported.
In addition, about 1,600 customers have purchased and used all 13 models from Samsung's Galaxy S line while another 2,400 have owned more than 10 units.
Currently, Samsung and SK Telecom are still determining the consumers who are the most loyal users of the Galaxy S series. Although the program is only offered in South Korea, the tech news site BGR noted that foreigners may also be eligible as long as they are avid Galaxy S device users.
Given the hefty price tag of the Galaxy S6, which is around $680 for the 32GB version and $760 for the 64GB model according to the International Business Times, it seems Samsung's offer is too good to be true. Moreover, the company made the announcement about the giveaway program just before April Fool's Day.
These factors, combined with the huge number of possible recipients of the free smartphone, can make anyone wonder if Samsung's giveaway program is real or just a prank.
But as pointed out by Pocket Now, it seems Samsung is serious with its offer and is determined to let some people get their hands on its latest flagship smartphone for free.
In addition, despite making the statement during the annual day of pranks, Samsung's announcement coincides with the scheduled release of the Galaxy S6, which is this month.
