The Korean Resource Center (KRC) in Los Angeles will be holding a California (CA) Dream Act workshop on February 14 to help undocumented students and their families to navigate through the process of applying for the CA Dream Act and for financial aid before the application deadline. The CA Dream Act application is due on March 2.
The CA Dream Act is a California state law that enables undocumented students to receive scholarships and financial aid.
The Act, which was enacted in 2011, is a combination of two Assembly Bills (AB): AB 130 and AB 131. AB 130 allows students to apply for and receive private scholarships, while AB 131 allows students to apply for and receive state-funded financial aid, university grants, and community college fee waivers. This means that the students who are eligible and apply for the CA Dream Act would be eligible for financial aid, and would receive financial aid based on their income, just like any other student.
Requirements to be eligible for the CA Dream Act include: minimum of three years of attendance in a California high school (the three years do not have to be consecutive); graduation from a CA high school or attainment of the G.E.D.; an affidavit which shows that an undocumented students will or has already filed an application to legalize immigration status.
Of note, applying for the CA Dream Act is not the same as applying for FAFSA, and those who have a social security number through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) must still apply separately for the CA Dream Act.
The KRC workshop will be held at 1 PM on February 14, at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. For more information and to register, visit bit.ly/krcdream.
